Every month we spend an evening scouring the pages of the latest issue of Previews and pick the ten titles we are looking forward to the most. This month it's the November 07 issue of Previews which includes comics scheduled to ship in January 2008.
BPRD: 1946 #1
Writer: Mike Mignola, Joshua Dysart
Art: Paul Azaceta
Dark Horse $2.99
Matt T: Pushing Hellboy father-figure Professor Trevor Bruttenholm to the fore, Mike Mignola’s classic series gets a much-need back story set in the aftermath of WWII.
CAPTAIN AMERICA #34
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Steve Epting
Marvel $2.99
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Steve Epting
Marvel $2.99
Matt C: Brubaker hasn’t put a foot wrong since he took over this title, and while I’m inclined to think it’s Bucky in the guise of the new Cap, I know Bru’s surprised me before so there’s no reason he won’t do again.
EVIL DEAD #1
Writer: Mark Verheiden
Art: John Bolton
Dark Horse $2.99
Matt T: Sam Raimi’s horror classic gets the comic treatment. Hopefully the darker elements, the kinetic visuals and the black-as-night comedy will translate.
Writers: Warren Ellis & Mike Wolfer
Art: Raulo Caceres
Avatar $1.99
Matt C: I’ve loved the previous adventures of Ellis’s “Combat Magician”, William Gravel (Strange Killings et al), and the quality of the writer’s recent output for Avatar bodes well for this ongoing.
SPIDER-MAN: WITH GREAT POWER #1
Writer: David Lapham
Art: Tony Harris
Marvel $3.99
James R: If you’ve ever ventured down the dark road of Stray Bullets you’ll know David Lapham writes comics like car crashes: not nice, but you can’t take your eyes off them. Following a unique turn on Batman, Lapham lets rip on Spidey’s teen years – the “marmite” title of the month, but definitely worth a look.
SUPERPOWERS #1
Writers: Alex Ross & Jim Kruger
Art: Carlos Paul
Dynamite Entertainment $2.99
Matt T: Fantastic art – or at least, covers – from Alex Ross alongside some obscure Golden Age heroes…. sounds like a recipe for success!
Writer: Amy Wolfram
Art: Karl Kerschl & Serge Lapointe
DC $2.99
Andy H: Another Year One mini from DC, this time focusing on their teenage heroes. Having enjoyed recent Year One’s (Metamorpho, Green Arrow) this looks like another corker as we learn how the team came together.
THE TWELVE #1
Writer: J. Michael Staczynski
Art: Chris Weston
Marvel $2.99
Matt T: Long forgotten heroes band together to face the 21st century while fighting off an unknown assassin. Looks crazy enough to work, with some seriously kitsch characters.
Y THE LAST MAN #60
Writer: Brian K Vaughan
Art: Pia Guerra & José Marzan Jr
DC/Vertigo $4.99
James R: And now, the end is near. From the killer pitch, Y has been required reading for me, with Vaughan showing his trademark cliffhangers with reassuring regularity, and this month sees him draw the curtain on the saga of the Last Man. Alas, poor Yorrick – I knew him, and I’m going to miss him!
YOUNG AVENGERS PRESENTS #1
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Paco Medina
Marvel $2.99
Matt T: A spotlight on each of the original Young Avengers, this mini features a different creative team handling a different character in each issue. Worth a look for beginners and fans alike, and hopefully it’ll lead into a new ongoing series.
