Esteemed movie mag Empire have just published an article entitled The 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters on their website. As is always the way with these things there are some interesting inclusions (Captain Haddock!), some foolish omissions (the Mighty Thor!!) and some rather dubious chart placings – Doctor Doom doesn’t even make the top twenty!!
It’s not a bad list, providing plenty of pub-argument material, and it’s well worth a browse – you even get to decide whether you think a character should be placed higher or lower (at time of writing, 83% of voters think Benjamin Grimm doesn’t belong in the Top 10 – fools!!).
I think they get the No.1 position right for a more populist chart (ie. not catering specifically to fanboys) but I’m sure many would disagree.
So, who would get the top spot in your own personal chart?

Haven't seen the article, but my top 10 comic book characters, in no particular order, would consist of John Constantine, Thor, Batman, Hawkeye, Tony Stark, Emma Frost, the Black Widow, the Scarlet Witch, and the Black Canary. I'll save the 10th spot for now, because I'm sure to think of a major omission as soon as I post this...

Thor would take the top spot for me at the moment, and I think I'd throw in (in no order) Batman, Wolverine, Doctor Doom, Galactus, Superman, She-Hulk, the Thing.... and a couple of others I can't decide on right now.
I notice you said Tony Stark rather than Iron Man, Rob - more interesting in his "secret" identity?
Yes, Iron Man is just a tin can - it's the character inside it I like, especially as portrayed in the Ultimates, the movie, and recently in the main universe books, now that Stark is taking a bigger part in stories.
