New comics are released tomorrow (in the States at least; we have to wait until Thursday in the UK!). Here's a brief look at our expectations for the books we're picking up this week.
Stewart R: My pull-list finds itself in a plumper condition this week with several titles evidently eager for me to swap my hard earned (ahem) cash for their printed, colour goodness. There’s less of a Marvel-bias this time out which usually makes for a more varied comic-reading experience. A few titles have fallen to the wayside this month with Jeff Parker’s Marvel Boy: The Uranian and S.W.O.R.D not impressing enough early on to keep my continued attention. A shame but that’s the way it goes with comic collecting!
Top of my list this week and first to get read on the train/bus when I head back from Paradox will be Daytripper #3 by brothers Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá. The first two issues were quite surprising as we got small insights into different parts of protagonist Bras’ life and I’m already expecting something different again this time around. The good thing is that the unpredictability is half the fun with a polished comic like this.
Mike Carey’s Unwritten seems to go from strength to strength as this maestro of fiction continues to play with comic formats and conventions to deliver a gripping crime/fantasy story that oozes tension. I get the feeling that #10 could really crank things up a notch as the way things were left at the end of the last issue suggested that Tommy’s abilities were going to be explored in greater detail very soon.
There’s two healthy dollops of Caped Crusader action with Batgirl #7 and Batman And Robin #8 flying onto the scene with a neat ‘KAPOW!’. Bryan Q. Miller’s been doing a great job with Batgirl and the inclusion of Dick and Damian has certainly made things more interesting, while the Dynamic Duo’s own title stalls a little with Batman’s trip to a Lazarus pit in good old Blighty, gor blimey guvnor, while Damian is getting the Robocop treatment elsewhere.
Of the Marvel titles this week I’m really looking forward to Realm Of Kings: Imperial Guard #4 as Abnett and Lanning have done a tremendous job of keeping the bulky teaming of Imperial Guard and Starjammers pacey, comical and action packed. I had been contemplating ditching this series after one issue but am so glad that I elected to carry on. There’s also the usual webhead action as Amazing Spider-Man #620 continues 'The Gauntlet' storyline which seems to be meandering along nicely at present.
Finally a special mention must surely go for the absolutely bonkers (and recently renamed) Hit Monkey #1. It seems that Marvel still haven’t got their scheduling sorted out and we now get a comic in our hands where the intended introduction to the title character was supposed to be the next issue of Deadpool when it hits the stands. Will this debut issue sell as much without us knowing who the heck the macaque with the guns is first? I’m guessing not but I stand ready and able to adopt a face of sheer surprise!

A light week. Think I'll be checking out Choker though - Ben Templesmith's art's is always a creep treat and I'm interested to see what Ben McCool can do in the writing department.

I'll have to post an apology in my review for Hit-Monkey #1 it would seem. Not only is it pretty darn good but it also isn't suffering from a scheduling faux pas as I'm guessing the Deadpool appearance will make a heck of a lot more sense!
