New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week. To see what’s available at Paradox this week, click here.
Stewart R: Whoa Momma! That’s one weighty pull-list this week! And nestled within it are a handful of debuts all crying out to be read! Superior Spider-Man #1 is of course in there and I’m excited to see just how Dan Slott is going to handle the transformation from Amazing Spider-Man to this, making it a different feeling comic, but in the same breath trying to maintain the readership from the now defunct title. Bringing Ryan Stegman in is certainly not a bad thing as he showed his flair with web-slinging characters over on Scarlet Spider and his style is quite interchangable with series artist Humberto Ramos. The other big #1 has to be Star Wars from Brian Wood and Carlos D’Anda. I’ve been looking forward to this since New York Comic Con where Wood showed genuine excitement to be writing within the universe that Lucas built and to be able to bridge two chapters of the cinematic canon with a history we haven’t ever been shown before. One of the successes of last year, Matt Hawkins’ Think Tank, gets something of an intermission piece this week with the release of Think Tank: Military Dossier #1. We’re sure to be getting some further background insight into super genius David Loren as well as the highly interesting and entertaining educational pieces on the fact behind the fiction that Hawkins laced throughout the first arc of his comic so well.
From beginnings to endings where I’ll be picking up Point Of Impact #4 and (it’s about time) Infinite Vacation #5, both coming in from Image. The delay on the latter may well have ripped any impetus away from what had been an enthralling science fiction tale about multiple universes and I just have to hope that Nick Spencer’s finale manages to suck me back in quickly and provide a satisfying conclusion. And then there are plenty of comics out this week where series are starting to pick up traction after promising starts. Both of Dennis Hopeless’ titles for Marvel NOW! have started strongly and I’ll be thumbing my way through Avengers Arena #3 and Cable And The X-Men #3 this week with interest. There’s also Si Spurrier’s X-Men Legacy #4 to be picked up and this chapter has artwork from Jorge Molina who has become one of the artists popping up on Marvel’s books to really keep an eye on as he’s an exceptional talent.
Matt C: I guess a lot of attention will be directed towards Superior Spider-Man this week but nothing I've seen or heard has convinced me I need to check it out. Instead it's all about Star Wars #1 from Dark Horse this Wednesday. I haven't collected a Star Wars comic on a regular basis since the UK reprints of the original Marvel series a long, long time ago (yep, I am that old!), and even though I'm a die-hard fan of the movies I've never really been tempted by any of the countless series since then. Until now. And that's primarily down to Brian Wood's participation. If Wood takes on a gig like this you know it's not going to be all about the money, he obviously feels inspired by the idea of penning some original adventures set between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, and considering he's one of the best writers in the business, that's more than enough reason to get me pumped up for this series. How long it will last is possibly contingent on the news that the license is going back to Marvel following Disney's recent acquisition of Lucasfilm, but I'm confident I'll be along for the ride, however long it lasts. Other books of note include the finale of Sweet Tooth and the next issue of the incredible Thor: God Of Thunder. I’ve got a good feeling about this week's upcoming haul!
Tom P:
It is a period of comics war.
Marvel Now!, DC's New 52 and
Image spaceships, striking
from a hidden base, have won
their first victory against
the evil Galactic comic book market .
During the battle, Rebel
spies managed to steal secret
plans to Brian Wood’s
ultimate weapon, STAR WARS #1,
an armoured comic book with enough power
to destroy an entire planet.
Pursued by the Empire's
sinister agents, Princess
Leia races home aboard her
starship, custodian of the
stolen issue that can save her
people and restore
freedom to the galaxy...
So yeah, that's out from Dark Horse and I'm getting it. Can't wait! Haven't got a Star Wars comic in years and nothing builds a world like Wood.
