New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week.
Andy H: October is certainly looking like the month where most of our pull-lists are returning to some sort of normality. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of new books to still come out and throw us into panic deciding what to add, what to drop etc, but it looks like my core pull is becoming more settled . First up this week is Skottie Young on his own Image book. I Hate Fairyland has his hallmark style but is definitely aimed at a slightly older audience - I'm holding back from saying 'mature' as, well, I'm buying it! Gert is a six year-old trapped in Fairyland for the last 30 years and now she's going to hack and slash her way out of it. Young is an accomplished writer/artist but I think this will be interesting to see him really cut lose. Plenty of Star Wars action going on in comicdom at the moment but there's always room for more. Now our favourite fuzzball gets his own miniseries. Written by Deadpool scribe Gerry Duggan and with art by Phil Noto we find Chewbacca crash landing on a planet occupied by Imperial forces. I'm thinking this may not be a massively dialogue driven series but, hey, you never know. With all the changes over at Marvel it's great to have a story about a character the way they were, so Captain America: White shines like a beacon at the moment and I'm really enjoying this miniseries as we get the 'real' Cap battling Nazis in World War Two. I hope there will be more like this. On the topic of changes is the new Guardians Of The Galaxy. It's getting harder to spot if there are any of the original Guardians left as the team now consists of Drax, Venom, Groot, Kitty Pryde and Ben Grimm (the Thing) with Rocket Raccoon now leading them as they roam the galaxy. Issue #1 sports an Art Adams cover so it's worth it for that alone. Still at Marvel, the Avengers are back! Well, two new teams in the shape of New Avengers #1 and Uncanny Avengers #1. It's a real mishmash of characters and with Gerry Duggan (him again) on Uncanny is it any surprise to see Deadpool on the team? One to check out this week from Vertigo is Twilight Children #1. Written by indie legend Gilbert Hernandez and with art by Darwyn Cooke this mini has creative talent to shout about. CIA agents, a scientist and a possible alien make up the cast of what could be a hit for Vertigo.
Matt C: I'm a huge fan of Darwyn Cooke and anything he illustrates I'll snap up, so Twilight Children #1 leads the pack for me this Wednesday. Beyond the name recognition, Gilbert Hernandez is not really a known quantity for me, but I'm pulling for this to be a success as I loves me some Cooke art! I also loves me some Chewbacca, my favourite Star Wars character as a child, and probably pretty near to the top for me still. The excellent Lando series ended last week so there's room for another Stars Wars book on my pull, even if I won't understand a word the 'walking carpet' is saying! From Image we have two brilliant exercises in world-building in the form of the latest chapters of East Of West and Low. Also from Image is Sex Criminals #13, a book I initially loved but I'm now starting to wonder if it's heading down the path of smug navel-gazing rather than pushing the narrative forward. This issue could be the decider of whether I stick with it or drop it.
