New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week.
Andy H: It's all getting a bit wacky out there this week. Company crossovers can be a strange thing. We've had the obvious ones (JLA/Avengers), the cool ones (Batman Versus Predator) and the WTF ones (Archie Meets The Punisher - oh, it happened!). Now here's the 'didn't see that one coming' crossover. Yep, Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! There's no reason it shouldn't work but you do wonder who comes up with these ideas. James Tynion IV, a regular Batman writer, brings the Turtles to Gotham as Batman tackles the Foot Clan. Dark Knight meets the Heroes in a Half Shell? Has to be worth 'shelling' out for! It's a busy Wednesday over at Image with a good five or six titles I'll be checking out. New from the mind of Matt Hawkins is Symmetry #1. There's no hunger or sickness and you don't have to work. Obviously too good to be true as individuality, creativity, and negative emotions have all been suppressed. Like all good sci-fi though there is someone - well, two 'someones' - out there who think differently and once they meet everything could change. The question is, will it be for the better, or you know, the other thing? The art of Raffaele Ienco looks stunning, so another good reason to pick it up. Monstress #1 was a thing of beauty and a big old read. Issue #2 is back to a normal page count but I expect more of the same high quality work from Marjorie M. Liu and Sana Takeda. Walking Dead #149 leads into the big issue #150 next month and the cover is super creepy, setting the scene for Negan to, no doubt, cause trouble. Has Rick made a deal with the devil? I'm getting flashbacks to Walking Dead #100 here - I can't see this having a happy ending! Topping the Image pile for me though are Birthright #12 and Trees #13, both cracking reads. Over at the House of Ideas it's the last issue of Secret Wars. Wait... what? It's not?! So, issue #8 is now the penultimate issue. Who lives? Who dies? I almost want to say who cares but I've got this far so I will see it out. It's been a long slog so I hope it's worth it. Finally, Scarlet Witch #1. Creatively this looks great. James Robinson is the writer, Vanesa Del Rey is the artist and it's all wrapped up in a David Aja cover. This has all the makings of a cracking read so, fingers crossed.
Matt C: A handful of debut issues are mixed in with my regular books this week. The Massive was an excellent series from Brian Wood and Garry Brown, and although it came to a thoroughly satisfying conclusion, if Wood feels there's mileage in a prequel series, then who am I to turn away The Massive: Ninth Wave #1? I flagged up Snow Blind #1 from BOOM! Studios in Ten Forward a couple of months back, and I'm still keen to see how the brilliant premise of a kid finding out he's in Witness Protection after posting photos of his dad on social media plays out. Andy's mentioned Symmetry #1 and Scarlet Witch #1, and I'm in complete agreement that both should be sampled this Wednesday. I'm also considering checking out Violent #1 from Ed Brisson and Adam Gorham - the attractive $2.99 price point is probably making that decision for me!
