New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week.
Matt C: As a large majority of comics fans are wired a certain way I'm pretty confident in saying that for many of us our weekly pull-lists will be a secondary concern this Wednesday. I'm sure some would consider that blasphemous but I can't avoid the ridiculous levels of excitement generated by the imminent release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It's reached the point where I can't really think about anything beyond the movie's debut (Christmas? Pah!) so trying to get my head around what comic releases are due in this week requires extra concentration. Fortunately (and this is probably the only time I use that adverb in this context!) there are no #1 issues for me to be set aside any brainpower for (it'd be another new fictional narrative to add to the numerous others crashing around in my mind after all!) but that's not to say there's nothing of interest. The Goddamned #2 makes an appearance at the top of the pile, and if it's anywhere near as good as the first issue, it's going to be pretty goddamn good (see what I did there!). Along with the likes of Autumnlands #8, Huck #2 and Tokyo Ghost #4, Image are where it's at again, although Mighty Thor #2 from Marvel is definitely something I'm eager to get hold of too. But all that can wait. Because... there has been an awakening... Have you felt it?
Kenny J: Issue #1 of Max Landis’ seven-part look at the life of the Man of Steel was a charming, if a bit heavy handed, tale about his childhood, framing Clark’s realisation that he is indeed an alien against E.T. the Extraterrestrial. It was enough to have me coming back for Superman: American Alien #2 but I’m mostly sold on that Ryan Sook cover and the hope we may get a rebellious Kal-El not yet with a cause. The book I’m most looking forward to this week is IDW’s soft reboot of Judge Dredd. Over recent years, the American publisher has taken 2000 AD’s most famous lawman and crafted a title that, although full of the oddities that make grace the British counterpart, is very much its own animal. With the two-up writing team that is Ulises Farinas and Erick Freitas this looks like it is going to continue as Joe Dredd finds himself and his beloved Mega City One cast back to the Stone Age. Mighty Thor #2, Batgirl #46, Tokyo Ghost #4, Sex #26 and The Wicked + The Divine #17 round off what looks like a bumper week and some quality Christmas reading.
