New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week.
Jo S: Having been my super-busy week of the month until recently, 'Week 1' saw a number of final issues in April for me, so I'm all about the new stuff this week! Simon Spurrier is lending his writing skills to Coda, about a magical bard by the name of Hum - I've waxed lyrical regarding Spurrier’s world-building talents at length but I'm a bit of a sceptic when it comes to magical realms so this is a gamble for me. Death Or Glory #1 from Image promises Rick Remender writing a girl-led heist story with French artist Bengal sharpening his pencils - I love a bit of French art, me. Hunt For Wolverine: Weapon Lost #1 caught my eye - Misty Knight is the hook for me on this one but as yet I don't think I've read much Daredevil other than last year’s Elektra series, so this will be partly educational too (and it's just four issues which is a bonus). Also in the ‘you really ought to’ pile is Avengers #1 - Jason Aaron leading? Well, it’d be daft not to, wouldn't it? Along with my regular dose of Bombshells, I'm seeing out the last issue of Rogue And Gambit, which has explored some interesting ideas, and I'm following the Rise Of The Black Panther, which feels like a genuine history of Wakandan rule. The cherry on the cake though (or should that be the astromech on the X-Wing?), will be Star Wars: Tag & Bink Were Here - apparently these guys are the most important Star Wars characters I've never heard about? Well, the second part of that is certainly true, let's leave judgement on the rest for Wednesday.
James R: May already! The evenings are starting to get lighter here in the Northern Hemisphere, but the summer still seems a long way off. Just as well that the comics releases this week are enough to warm my black heart - it's a great mix of old favourites, something new and an exciting fresh start. Starting with Dark Horse, the next issue of Doctor Star: Kingdom Of Lost Tomorrows gives me my Jeff Lemire fix for the week - I stand by my claim that the Black Hammer universe is the most exciting family of titles at the moment, and Doctor Star has been another confident (and heartbreaking) instalment in the world of Spiral City. From DC, it's the next instalment in Tom King's beguiling Batman run - after a brilliant timeline-altering issue with Booster Gold last time out, I can't wait to see where this issue goes. Image comics brings us two old favourites - the latest issues of SF epics Black Science and East Of West. Black Science creator Rick Remender also has a new title out too, the intriguing Death Or Glory. I'd take a look at any new series from Remender and so the story of Glory, a woman who has three days to pull off four dangerous cross-country heists - that's a definite yes for me! After having my Marvel pull reduce down to almost nothing, I'm thrilled that the relaunched Avengers looks like it's back to being a must-read title. Jason Aaron couldn't write a bad book if he tried, and with art from the always-solid Ed McGuinness, it means that I'm genuinely enthused about Earth's Mightiest Heroes for the first time since Jonathan Hickman finished Secret Wars. And speaking of Hickman - yes! Not a dream! Not a hoax! S.H.I.E.L.D. IS BACK! I absolutely adore Hickman and Weaver's insane retelling of both Marvel and human history, and I was gutted when the series finished without a definite ending. But Stan and Jack be praised, we're getting a conclusion, starting this week! That's my pull-list, but I know that our beloved comic shop proprietor Andy H would want me to also mention that Marvel also bring us Star Wars: Tag & Bink Were Here. The Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of the Star Wars universe were a fan-favourite of the Dark Horse years, and it's good to see them get another bow at Marvel.
