New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week along with a full list of titles that will be available from Paradox Comics.
Jo S: Last week's pull-list came close to requiring specialist transport to get it home, it was such a huge crop (well, I needed a plastic carrier instead of paper)! Along with what turned out to be a giant list of current stuff, I'd committed to getting Lazarus up to date (an unfailingly consistent joy; I don't think I will ever stop raving about it) and picked up High Level #1 and #2 following some good reviews. Hence this week, I came to the new list fully intending to trim my comics waistline with a daintier diet - but of course, it's not to be, my avarice for comics has overwhelmed me once more in the face of a buffet of delights!
I picked up Tini Howard's The Forgotten Queen #1 too late last month to review it, and admittedly have only just found it in the to-read pile when I saw the second issue appearing in my list. Amilcar Pinna's art is absolutely gorgeous in this lush blend of historical embellishment and modern science-meets-magic - I loved the enigmatic war-mongering Tibûtu, with her mysterious influence on the men she seeks to control - I don't get much from Valiant but this was an unexpected gem.
In the ‘regulars’ pile this week are Ice Cream Man #11 - this has been such a glorious variety of weird, creepy, unnerving deliciousness and is always inventive - along with the fabulously stylish Hex Wives, the deeply complex Bone Parish and issue three of Daredevil - this is working so well as a detective story - all of which have me relishing the darker side of comics.
My single new start this week (yes, managing to stick to that rule at least) should manage to lighten the mood at least - I covered Dial H For Hero for the Shipping Forecast and this reappearance of a classic (how many kids would know how to actually ‘dial’ anything these days?!) looks like it will be fun.
For those of you who, like me, collected the five issues of Vaughan, Vicente and Martin's Barrier last year and are now struggling to store the darn things because of their weird format, help is at hand this week! Image have finally released the limited edition slipcase to collect them all in. You definitely won't be able to fit these into a comic box now but you'll be able to display them on the shelving with your hardcovers at least!
Finally, and my most anticipated by a wide margin, Heroes In Crisis comes to its antepenultimate issue. The thoughts of Gnarrk dominated issue #6 and some major revelations broke: Tom King and Clay Mann have given us 100% prime quality content throughout this series and I'm in that delicious phase of a comic book where I know I'll be broken-hearted when it ends but I can't help but give myself to it completely even so.
