New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week along with a full list of titles that will be available from Paradox Comics.
James R: It's a great week for me for one reason: Ascender. As the Number One Jeff Lemire fanboy of the PCG, I'm always thrilled to see that the Canadian genius is back with a new series, but this has the extra excitement of being a sequel to the great Descender, the SF epic beautifully illustrated by Dustin Nguyen. The two have re-teamed for this series, set ten years after the events of Descender. Whereas Descender focused on science, Ascender puts the focus more on a fantasy quest, with a universe where magic has replaced machinery. I'm fascinated by this pivot, and I can't wait to read this one. Image are responsible for another favourite of mine - the sensational Criminal. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' neo-noir masterpiece has been on fine form since it returned, and I'm sure this week will see another essential issue.
Over at DC, I'm picking up the superb Heroes In Crisis - I've really enjoyed how well Tom King has wrong-footed the audience with the apparent murder-mystery at the heart of this event book and, as we head toward the conclusion, I find myself in the great position of not knowing just how this one is going to play out. Finally, I'm also getting the second issue of Dial H For Hero - I was really impressed with how writer Sam Humphries and artist Joe Quinones were using the H Dial to shift the book's whole appearance, and I'm intrigued to see if there's now some narrative substance to match this ingenious idea.
