New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week along with a full list of titles that will be available from Paradox Comics.
James R: Following a week of profoundly dull weather in these increasingly sorry isles, it's reassuring to see that the coming week's pull-list has a fistful of titles to reignite my summer. Top of the heap for me is the latest instalment of my joint-favourite ongoing title - Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino's sublime Gideon Falls from Image. The same publisher also brings us another issue of Assassin Nation. This book has been the real surprise package of 2019 for me, and if you've missed out on Kyle Starks' and Erica Henderson's full-throttled series, I strongly advise looking out for the trade later this year.
My other titles come from DC - I think there's little doubt that the publisher have certainly been revitalised over the last couple of years (although a couple of editorial decisions, and the ongoing issues with Vertigo, remain a concern). This week is a great example of how strong their titles are: I'm picking up Tom King's latest issue in his essential Batman run, and the next 'intermission' Justice League issue (with James Tynion IV stepping in as part of the writing tag-team with Scott Snyder). I had never been a huge fan of the Justice League but, after 25 issues, I'm still enjoying it and looking forward to seeing where 'Year of the Villain' is going. Finally, there's the real marquee title of the week: Superman: Year One. Frank Miller was responsible for one of my all-time favourite stories with Batman: Year One so the idea of him producing the same magic for the Man of Steel, with art from the legendary John Romita Jr., is simply irresistible.
