New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week along with a full list of titles that will be available from Paradox Comics.
Jo S: Rich pickings in this week's abundant list: some horror, some fantasy, some comedy and a little heresy - it looks to be nothing if not a varied experience for me.
The horror dose comes in the form of a double shot of Alex Cormack's rich, intense artwork: the exhaustingly violent Sink has yet to fail in the 'I'm queasy but I love it' stakes and the impossibly yet more gruesome Road Of Bones; the attack on one of the band of gulag escapees appeared, as was foreshadowed in issue #3, but not as planned at all! Let's see if issue #4 will wrap up this miniseries with a kitten and bunny cuddlefest to lighten the dismal mood. I tend to include She Could Fly: The Lost Pilot in my horror pile too, I think mostly because I associate Martín Morazzo's off-kilter, unnerving artwork with Generation Gone and especially with Ice Cream Man, which is still creeping me out at 13 issues. The series wraps up this week; it's been a pretty stressful ride throughout and it feels like it's been going for more than its five so far, which I guess is a sign that it's a good time to close up!
Image are really going all out on the fantasy kick at the moment: the first couple of issues of Sonata caught my attention with beautiful credible visuals of alien races vying for resources on a misty but dramatic new world. I missed the first issue of Reaver (tsk, a busy week, something had to go), but the PCG's own Kenny J convinced me swiftly of my error this week, and I'll be picking up issues #1 and #2 this Wednesday to correct that.
The comedy and heresy come packaged together, as is often the case, I guess - I need to reread Second Coming #1 before taking on issue 2 as, for some reason, I've lost track of any further memory of it except that it made me cackle and wince at the same time, something good comedy is wont to do.
Three big character titles next: a week which doesn't contain a Catwoman comic, or at least something by Joëlle Jones, is a grey and dismal affair, so I will certainly be drawing issue #14 from my paper bag with a sunny smile, even if she's just doing the covers right now. I'm working on learning more about the Silver Surfer, and while the first two issues of Silver Surfer Black have been pretty mind-blowing, they're mind-blowingly pretty too! The colour-saturated pages are deeply effective, even if the story currently has me mostly going "Who? What? Eh?"
Powers Of X (the mortification of failing to notice, as a mathematician by trade, that it's 'Powers of 10' rather than 'X' for Xavier! I could curl up on the spot!) was honestly all too much for me in the first issue, but I have been reassured by my PCG colleagues that it's okay to just go with the flow, deeper understanding will follow - and the second House Of X was JUST SO GOOD, I can't really let this one escape me, though I think it'll take a few goes to 'get' it.
The issue #1 spot (yes, I'm determined to keep to no more than one new start a week) (yes, I also know I'm rubbish at sticking to that) goes to The White Trees. It's Chip Zdarsky on the cover that won this book a place on my list - he really seems to have the character magic flowing from his fingertips right now, so I'm looking forward to seeing how he handles the third Image fantasy book in my haul this week.
