New comics are due to hit the shelves on Wednesday so here’s a look ahead at some of the books we’ll be picking up this week along with a full list of titles that will be available from Paradox Comics.
Jo S: It's a relatively quiet week for me - a five week month'll do that to you, apparently - but there's plenty still for me to look forward to as this relentless autumn term drags itself through the last leg before the half term break. Autumnal sunshine gleams off cold steel in Tommy Gun Wizards, a quirky little series from Dark Horse with Christian Ward putting down his paintbrush and wielding the writer's pen instead - denying that the Ward-art pages at the ends of the first two issues were my favourite bit would be foolish but credit is still due to Kivela for his visualisation of Ward's seedy underground world of illicit magic and gangland corruption.
I've enjoyed the three issues of controversial comic Second Coming but worry that I haven't really given them the depth of attention they deserve - I'm hoping to correct that in this quieter week with issue #4. Valkyrie: Jane Foster was a favourite of September's crop; I enjoyed particularly Ewing and Aaron's attention to detail in describing to us the individual scent of each of the afterlives - comics reaching even more of the senses than usual! - and a little shout out to Joe Sabino; I'm kind of a nerd for fancy lettering and his work on Valkyrie is something special.
Criminal reaches #9 this week: this is like the chocolate fudge brownie gateau of the comics world - rich, dark, satisfying, one serving keeps you going for ages but you can't wait to get your spoon into the next. Brubaker's story construction is phenomenal - I imagine his work space must have a whole wall dedicated to laying out the various strands of character timeline so that he can reference back and forth over time and space.
I'm picking up a couple of issue #1s lastly: I looked at Amazing Mary Jane for our Shipping Forecast and have some mixed feelings about this. I love the character, love the redheaded feistiness, and the idea of a book with her as lead sounds promising… however the cover art shows her as an unrealistically skinny clothes horse and the story, about MJ getting her big Hollywood break, doesn't immediately shout 'strong female lead'. I promise to reserve judgement until I've read it though.
Marauders #1 is the second book in the latest X-Men event, starring Captain Kitty Pryde, Storm, Pyro, Bishop and Iceman, in a mission to keep Earth's seaways safe, funded by Emma Frost. The premise seems a bit concocted, but Kitty and Emma leading the X-Buccaneers sounds jolly (Roger), arrrrrrr!
