Every month we spend an evening scouring the pages of the latest issue of Previews and pick the titles we are looking forward to the most. This month it's the October issue which includes comics scheduled to ship in December 2019.
STAR WARS: THE RISE OF KYLO REN #1

James R: YAAAAS, quite frankly. As a card-carrying, die-hard Star Wars fan, I cannot wait for this series. Undoubtedly, the character of Kylo Ren (or Ben Solo, if you’d rather) has been the highlight amongst many brilliant moments for me in the sequel trilogy, thanks mostly to the incredible acting chops of Adam Driver. I feel a genuine sense of worry over how his story will be resolved in the Rise Of Skywalker but for now I can ease my fears thanks to this miniseries from Charles Soule and Will Sliney. Soule's has been the most successful run of the new Marvel era of Star Wars books, with his Darth Vader series rightfully winning the plaudits by giving us fresh character insights, expanding the mythology, and being a great read in its own right. Now he turns his attention to Anakin Skywalker’s wayward grandson, and will explain just how he fell from the light. It’s not often that the Star Wars comics are a must-read for fans, but this looks like the exception.
THE BUTCHER OF PARIS #1

Jo S: Stephanie Phillips here takes on a true crime story, that of heinous serial killer and irreformable criminal Marcel Petiot, responsible for dozens if not scores of murders, many likely undiscovered, who was finally brought to justice in 1946. Many of his crimes were committed during Nazi occupation of Paris, which Phillips chooses as the backdrop for her telling of the story. True crime needs some delicate handling so it will be interesting to see how far over the border into salaciousness this slides in search of a good story: Petiot's crimes were perhaps awful enough that even a fully accurate historical account will be gripping indeed.
THE KILL LOCK #1

Matt C: Sometimes something springs out of Previews that may have otherwise been overlooked, but for whatever reason (a great title, a great cover, a great premise) it catches the attention. Here we have four robots convicted of terrible crimes, banished from their homeworld and locked together as punishment; if one dies then they all die. I haven't got much more to go on beyond that, but it's a neat concept and having looked at the preview art it's going to be visually impressive at the very least. From writer/artist Livio Ramondelli - who I'm not familiar with (he's done Transformers work amongst other projects) - this looks really promising.
THE OLD GUARD: FORCE MULTIPLIED #1

Jo S: It's tough restraining myself from writing this entire piece in capital letters; my excitement level at the return of one of my favourite series of my comic-reading life so far is so high. Whilst, in my mind, perfectly formed in its own right, the first volume of The Old Guard managed to both give a rounded ending and also leave me hanging on morsels of storyline left open, so I'm thirsting deeply for a continuation and a new chapter. Rucka's knack for strong women is exemplified in immortal Andy; she is a phenomenal character and the team of warriors she has built is like an A-Team of reanimating psychically connected antiheroes: this will be my most-anticipated book of 2019 - and there's even a movie on the way!
SKULL DIGGER: FROM THE WORLD OF BLACK HAMMER #1

James R: The ‘main’ Black Hammer book may have come to an end (for now) but the Black Hammer Universe keeps on expanding. First teased in the Encyclopedia earlier this year, Skulldigger looks like he might be Spiral City’s version of the Dark Knight crossed with the Punisher (we’ve been told that he never uses guns, but certainly employs lethal force). Jeff Lemire, as usual, is writing, and the art from Tonci Zonjic looks terrific. I’ll obviously buy anything with Lemire’s name on it, but I’m especially looking forward to seeing how he incorporates two of the most popular comics tropes into the wonderful world of Black Hammer.
SPIDER-HAM #1

Jo S: No surprise to regular readers of the PCG that I'm looking forward to this one! Porker and Parker in a team-up? Subtitled 'Aporkalypse Now'? Involving the web-slinging spider bitten by a radioactive pig and man bitten by a radioactive spider travelling through time? Well, that last point will probably require deeper scrutiny to gain my absolute approval but otherwise it's a 100% ham-tastic YES from me.
